How old do I have to be in Minnesota to take my instruction permit or learner's permt test?
To take your Minnesota learners permit test, Minnesota's Driver and Vehicle Services ("DVS") Department requires you to be at least 15 years old and have completed 30 hours of driver education classroom instruction, such as Teen Driving Course Minnesota online driver education class.
How old do I have to be to get my Minnesota drivers license?
The Minnesota DVS seperates Minnesota drivers license into two (2) categories: provisional licenses and graduated (unrestricted) licenses. 

You may receive your provisional license after your 16th birthday, so long as you have your Minnesota instruction permit and have completed your 30 hours of drivers education classes like the online drivers education class offered by Teen Driving Course.  Please know that your provisional license will be revoked if you are convicted of a crash-related moving violation or convicted of drunk-driving or driving under the influence. 

If you're under 18, you will become eligible to obtain a graduated drivers license once you've had your provisional license for 12 months, have driven for at least 10 hours under the supervision of a licensed driver who's at least 21 years of age, and have a clean driving record.  This means no convictions of crash-related moving violations, no convictions for alcohol or controlled-substance violations, and no more than one (1) conviction of a non-crash-related moving violation.


What paperwork or documentation will I need to provide to the Minnesota DVS before I can take a my instruction permit test?
To get your Minnesota instruction permit, you need to show the Minnesota DVS proof of your identify, such as a certified birth certificate, your Social Security number, and a Blue Card from your driving school.  You must also bring a parent or guardian to sign your Minnesota instruction permit application.
What if I don't pass the Minnesota drivers license exam?
If you don't pass the Minnesota drivers license exam, you can retake the exam but will have to wait a day before returning to a Minnesota DVS location to take the drivers license test again.
How many questions are on Teen Driving Course's final exam for the Minnesota online education class?
You will need to pass a final examination at the end of the Teen Driving Course Minnesota online driver education class.  This exam covers what was reviewed throughout the class. The exam is 40 questions long and you must answer 32 correctly to pass and receive your certificate of completion.
Does Teen Driving Course satisfy Minnesota DVS requirements?
Yes!  The Minnesota DVS has authorized Teen Driving Course as an approved driver education course and will satisfy classroom requirements to receive your Minnesota instruction permit and provisional drivers license.
How long will it take to receive my certificate of completion from Teen Driving Course?
Teen Driving Course offers several delivery options: regular mail (USPS), FedEx 3rd Day Delivery, FedEx 2nd Day Delivery, and FedEx Overnight Delivery.

When you sign up for our Minnesota online driver education program, you can choose which delivery method you prefer (and you can change your delivery option at any time prior to your completing the course).  Please note that if you do go with FedEx, there is an additional fee.
I have received my instruction permit from the Minnesota DVS! Can I start driving now?
Once you receive your instruction permit from the Minnesota DVS, you can begin driving, but remember you must be accompanied by a licensed Minnesota driver who's at least 21 years old sitting next to you in the front passenger seat.
How long do I need to have my Minnesota instruction permit before I can get my Minnesota drivers license?
To receive your Minnesota provisional drivers license, you must first hold your Minnesota instruction permit for 6 months with no traffic violations.

Am I required to do any behind-the-wheel training?
Yes.  In order to get our instruction permit, you must be currently enrolled in a professional behind-the-wheel driving class. You must successfully complete this class before you can apply for a drivers license with the Minnesota DVS.
How many hours of supervised driving do I have to have before I can get my Minnesota drivers license?
In addition to completing your drivers education requirements, as well as drivers education classes such as those offered by Teen Driving Course, the Minnesota DVS requires you to complete 30 hours of supervised driving (including ten (10) hours at night) with a licensed Minnesota driver age 21 or older before you can apply for your Minnesota provisional drivers license.
Can my friends ride with me when I drive with my Minnesota instruction permit or drivers license?
For the first six (6) months after receiving your Minnesota provisional license, you may drive with only one (1) passenger under the age of 20 who's not a member of your immediately family unless you are accompanied by a parent or guardian. During the second six (6) months after receiving your provisional license, you may drive with no more than three (3) passengers under 20 outside your immediate family unless you're accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Can I drive alone with my Minensota instruction permit? What about my Minnesota privisional drivers license?
With an instruction permit, ABSOLUTELY NOT.  Minnesota state law expressly prohibits Minnesota drivers who only hold an instruction permit from driving alone.

However, when you receive your Minnesota provisional drivers license, these restrictions begin to ease. For the first six (6) months, you may drive alone on your Minnesota provisional license from 5am until midnight. After those hours, you must be accompanied by a Minnesota driver who is at least 21 years old unless you are driving to or from work, or are driving as part of your employment. The Minnesota DVS will also allow you to drive alone between midnight and 5am if you are driving to or from a school-sponsored function for which transportation has not been privided by the school.
