OKLAHOMA  DRIVER’S EDUCATION

Oklahoma has a Graduated Licensing Law.  This means that if you are under the age of 17, there is a two-stage process for you to get your driver license.

Step 1: Purchase our driver education course and register with the Oklahoma DPS for parent-taught driver education

Step 2: Complete the first section of our Driver Education course and study for the written test

Step 3: Go to the DPS office for a Learner License

Step 4: Continue studying our course and practicing your behind-the-wheel instruction

Step 5: Take the road test with your parent or guardian

Step 6: Send for Certificate of Completion from us

Step 7: Get your License at DPS

Step 1: Purchase our driver education course and register with the Oklahoma DPS for parent-taught driver education

Our driver education course is approved by the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety for your parent-taught driver education needs.

Step 2: Complete the first section of our Driver Education course and study for the written test

After you have completed the first section of our Driver Education course and have studied for the written test, you may go to a DPS office for your Instruction Permit.

You will need to study for the DPS written exam by reading through the Oklahoma Driver’s Manual.  It is important that you know all the rules and regulations of driving before taking the written test, so read carefully!

Step 3: Go to the DPS office for a Learner License

A Class D Learner License (permit) is available when you are 15½.  To qualify for a Learner License, you must bring your parent or legal guardian with you who will sign an affidavit that he or she will provide the required 36 hours of training.  Your parent or guardian also must sign your application for a Learner License at the time you pay the fee.

You will need to pass the written and vision tests required for a license.  Your physical condition must meet required standards and you must be able to read and understand road signs.  If you are 16, the Learner License is available to you if you qualify for the regular license, except for the driving test.

A Learner License is only valid if there is a licensed driver age 21 or older sitting in the seat beside the driver.  The driving test can be taken as early as 30 days after the permit is issued, as long as you are at least 16 years old.  When you pass the driving test, the “Licensed Driver in the Front Seat” restriction is lifted.

Step 4: Continue studying our course and practicing your behind-the-wheel instruction

Go through our driver education course, being sure to take all the quizzes and do all the practice driving.

Step 5: Take the road test with your parent or guardian

When you have finished our driver education course, and you have covered all of the topics in the behind-the-wheel training, your parent or guardian may administer your final road test.

Step 6: Send for Certificate of Completion from us

When you have completed the course and the final road test, send all of the relevant documents (the final test, the driving log, etc.) back to us and we will send you your Certificate of Completion.

Step 7: Get your License at DPS

You must be at least 16 years old and have had you learners permit for at least 30 days before you can take the driving test for your license.

When you go to the DPS for your Driver License, you must bring:

  • The completed Application Form.  Fill in your full legal name, residence address, mailing address, date birth, Social Security Number, race, height, eye, hair color, and weight. Answer the questions and sign the application.
  • Proper identification. Notarized documents are not acceptable.
  • The tag numbers of all vehicles you own, if any.
  • Valid proof of auto liability insurance (if you’re taking the driving test).
  • Certificate of completion of driver’s education from our parent-taught driver’s education course, which is approved by the Department of Public Safety
  • Documentation of reading proficiency on a form provided by an approved school. All forms provided by the schools must be typed. Each signature block must have original signature and school seal (no stamped signatures).

If you are under 18, you must also bring one of the following:

  • Proof of enrollment in a secondary or vocational-technical school, on a form provided by your school
  • Proof of an excused absence, on a form provided by your school
  • Proof of enrollment and satisfactory progress in a program leading to a Certificate of High School Equivalency (General Equivalency Diploma: GED), on a form provided by the Department of Public Safety.
  • Proof of home schooling, on a form provided by the Department of Public Safety
  • Proof that you have completed a GED
  • Your high school diploma
  • Proof of employment, if you are working a minimum of 24 hours a week.

By the age of 17, the GDL restrictions no longer apply.  However, until you are 18, your license is probationary (you are in a trial period to show you can drive safely and legally). The  Department of Public Safety may cancel or suspend your license for any unlawful act, negligence, or misconduct while driving.
