Step 1

Complete our home study Driver Education course

Sign up for our home-study course and after you finish we will send you a DMV Certificate of Completion form that you show to the DMV when you are ready to take the driving skills test for your Driver License.

Our fully interactive course consists of lessons that will help you go through Driver Education in the comfort of your own home, on your computer, at your own pace.

Since you already attend enough classes at school, why bother sitting through more hours of class when you can take Driver Education at your own leisure.  How cool is that?

 Step 2

Study for the DMV written test

You will need to study for the DMV written (knowledge) test by reading through the Nevada Drivers Handbook.  It is important that you know all the rules and regulations of driving before taking the written test, so read carefully!

 Step 3

Go to your local DMV to take the written exam

The lines at the DMV are notoriously very long and you don't want to waste all your time standing in line.  Make sure that you're well prepared, so you can pass the test on your first try.  Most DMVs are open Monday through Friday until 5 pm, so plan ahead of time and see which date and time would work best for you.

 Step 4

Bring necessary documents to the DMV office for Instruction Permit

To get your Instruction permit, you must:

  • Be at least 15½
  • Complete the Driver License Application form DLD1.  (An original DLD1 form must be submitted. Copies obtained by xeroxing, faxing, or other methods will not be accepted.)  You can get this form from your local DMV.
  • Have your parents' or guardians' signatures on the financial responsibility section of the application form
  • Verify your birth date and legal presence
  • Provide your social security card
  • Pass a vision exam
  • Pass the written exam. There are 50 multiple-choice questions on the test.  A passing score is 80%.
  • Pay the $21.75 application fee

 Step 5

Complete behind-the-wheel training

After you receive your Instruction Permit, you may drive only with a licensed driver, who is 21 years or older and has at least one year of driving experience, seated next to you at all times.  Instruction Permits are valid for one year.

You must complete 50 hours of behind-the-wheel training.  Again, this experience must be with a licensed driver, who is 21 or older and has been licensed for at least one year, seated next to you at all times.

When you apply for your Driver License, you must have a parent or guardian sign the Affidavit for Minor to Be Licensed form (DLD-102) stating that you have completed this training.

 Step 6

Take the driving test at the DMV

The minimum age to receive a Driver License is 16.  To apply for a Driver License, you must have held an Instruction Permit for at least 6 months if you are under the age of 18.

When you have met the requirements for Driver Education, Permit Time Limits, and Behind-the-Wheel Experience, you may call the DMV to schedule a driving skills test.  When you go to the DMV for the test, you must bring the following with you:

  • A parent or guardian who must sign Financial Responsibility Statement and Affidavit for Minor to Be Licensed
  • Drivers Education Certificate of Completion (unless you are exempt based on your geographic location)
  • Your Instruction Permit
  • A vehicle with Registration and Insurance

You can take the skills test in any passenger car or truck which is properly registered and insured. The Drive Examiner will check the registration and insurance and perform a safety inspection.

The examiner will give you instructions on where to drive for the test.   Serious traffic violations such as speeding or failure to yield will result in automatic failure.   Examiners use a point system to grade other aspects of performance.   If you fail the test, the examiner will explain why and instruct you on how to re-take it.   A 30-day time limit can be imposed.  Once you have passed the Driving Skills test, you return to the DMV and have your license issued.  The fee is $2.25.

 Step 7

Receive Driver License upon passing the driving test

There are some restrictions that will be placed on your Driver License as a minor.

Drivers under 18 cannot transport any passenger under the age of 18, except for immediate family members, for the first 90 days after receiving their driver's license.

Additionally, drivers under 18 may not operate a motor vehicle between the hours of 10:00 pm and 5:00 am unless they are driving to or from a scheduled event.  This curfew remains in effect until the driver turns 18, regardless of when the driver's license was issued.
