Louisiana Frequently Asked Questions
How old do I have to be in Louisiana to get my learners permit to drive?
Louisiana's Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) requires you to be 15 years of age before applying for a learners permit.  If you are 17 or older, you do not have to apply for a learners permit at all, and can simply fulfill Louisiana drivers license requirements to take the Louisiana drivers license exam.
Will online drivers education through Teen Driving Course satisfy Louisiana OMV requirements?
In Louisiana, everyone must complete a 38-hour drivers education class.  While some states allow online driver education to substitute for in-room courses, in Louisiana Teen Driving Course can be taken as a supplementary educational tool only.

However, Teen Driving Course's online drivers education class will prepare you for your learners permit exam long before you sign up for driving school, and put you on a fast track to successfully fulfilling your Louisiana drivers education requirements.
What paperwork do I need before they'll let me take my learners permit test?
You'll need to the following documents with you when you go to your local Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles ("OMV") office to take your learners permit test

  • Birth certificate
  • 2 secondary ID forms: (a social security card, high school ID, or other photo ID)
  • If you're under 18, your parents must come with you when you go to take your learners permit test.
What if I don’t pass the Louisiana learners permit test? How many times can I take the test?
The Louisiana OMV requires that you pass a written exam, a road sign identification exam and a road test before being issued your Louisiana learners permit.  If you don't pass the exam, you can retake it until you succeed, but you can only take the tests once per day.

Teen Driving Course's Louisiana online driver education classes will prepare you for these exams and your remaining driver education, through easy-to-follow web instruction, quizzes and other learning aids, and a comprehensive final exam.  With Teen Driving Course's , you can expect to take your learners permit exams once and succeed with ease.
How many questions are on the final exam I have to take at the end of the Teen Driving Course online class?
Teen Driving Course requires you to pass a comprehensive final exam to complete your Louisiana online drivers education class.  The exam is 35 questions and, just like Louisiana OMV exams, you will need 80% to pass.  If you don't success at first, you can retake the exam at your own pace until you pass, free of charge.
How long until I receive my Teen Driving Course Louisiana online drivers education certificate of completion?
Your certificate of completion from Teen Driving Course normally arrives in three to five business days if you opt to have it sent via regular mail.  Or, for an extra fee, you can choose to have FedEx deliver it to you via their 3rd day, 2nd day, or Overnight Delivery service.  It's up to you.
When can I start driving with my Louisiana learners permit?
You can start driving once you receive your Louisiana learners permit.  The Louisiana OMV requires you to be accompanied by a licensed driver of at least 21 years of age (or 18 years if the licensed driver is your sibling)  until you receive your unrestricted drivers license.
How long do I need to have my Louisiana learners permit before I can get my unrestricted drivers license?
In Louisiana, you must be at least 16 to apply for a drivers license.  You must also have held your learners permit for six months, and either completed one of the Louisiana OMV-approved 38-hour driving school courses, or be 17 years of age and completed a smaller, Louisiana OMV-approved six-hour course.
Can my friends ride with me after I get my permit? Can I drive alone?
When you finally get the chance to drive with your Louisiana learners permit, we understand the excitement and desire to drive around, be it alone or with your friends.  Driving is a new and exciting experience and, if done safely, is sure to be a fun part of your life.

The Louisiana OMV does allow you to carry other passengers while driving with your learners permit--BUT--you must be accompanied by a licensed driver of at least 21 years of age or a brother or sister at least 18 years of age who is a licensed driver.  Without that supervised adult in your passenger seat, you are breaking the law and in danger of having your Louisiana driving privileges taken away before you even had a chance to enjoy them.  Be smart and make sure you always have a supervised licensed Louisiana driver with you whenever driving on your learners permit.
Can my friends ride with me after I get my Louisiana drivers license? What is an intermediate license?
Once you have turned 16 and have completed your learners permit requirements you will be eligible for an intermediate drivers license.  With an intermediate drivers license, you can drive alone or with friends during the hours of 5am and 11pm.  If you drive between 11pm and 5am you must have a licensed Louisiana driver with you who is at least 21 years or older.

When you turn 17, these time restrictions will be lifted as you will be eligible for an unrestricted drivers license.
