After I get my learners permit, how long until I'm allowed to get my real, official drivers license?
Assuming you've never been licensed before or have proof that you've had past driving experience in another state, South Carolina law requires that you wait at least six (6) months from the time you receive your learners permit before you upgrade to a drivers license.

If you have never been licensed or do not have proof of past driving experience in another state, the South Carolina DMV mandates that you hold your South Carolina beginners permit for six months before being eligible to take a drivers license exam.
Do I have to enroll in a drivers education class which offers behind-the-wheel training?
Before you can get your drivers license, you need to take a state-approved drivers education course.  Many of these courses will provide behind-the-wheel training from a licensed South Carolina professional driving instructor.

How many supervised driving hours must I do outside of my required drivers education course to get my drivers license?
In addition to the driving practice you will do in your state-approved drivers education course, you also need to complete at least 40 hours of driving practice (10 of which must be at night) outside of class.  These hours must be supervised by your parents or legal guardians or by a licensed South Carolina driver who's at least 21 years old whom your parents or legal guardians approve of.

Can I have passengers in the car after I get my permit or drivers license?
If you have a South Carolina conditional license or special restricted license, you cannot have more than two (2) passengers under the age of 21 unless you have a 21-year-old licensed driver seated next to you in the front passenger seat.  The only exceptions are if you are taking family members to and from school.

Can I drive alone with only a learners permit?
Absolutely NOT!  There's a reason it's called a "learners permit."  You may only drive if you have a licensed South Carolina driver who's at least 21 years old sitting in the front passenger seat supervising you.  Additionally, you are not allowed to drive at all between the hours of 12 midnight and 6am.
