NEW JERSEY DRIVER LICENSE REQUIREMENTS AT-A-GLANCE:
Minimum Age for Learner Permit 16 years
Learner Permit Holding Period 6 months with a qualified supervising driver (i.e.--a licensed driver who's at least 21 years old)
Minimum Amount of Supervised Driving If you are enrolled in an approved drivers education course, you do not require any additional supervised driving practice outside of the course
Minimum Age for Driver License You must be at least 17 years old to get a provisional driver's license.
Road Test Yes
Unsupervised Driving Rules Learner’s Permit holders & Examination Permit holders may only drive if a qualified supervising driver is seated in the front passenger seat.
Passenger Rules Provisional license drivers may only carry parents/guardians, dependents, and one (1) other person as passengers. If your parent/guardian is with you, you may carry additional passengers.
Other To apply for a learner permit, applicant must be at least 16 years of age and enrolled in an approved behind-the-wheel driving training course. This is not required for applicants over 17
