Universal Driving School FAQ’s
Is Universal Driving School a certified driving school in Illinois?
Just because a driving school appears on our directory of driver training institutions, we cannot guarantee that they are fully licensed to offer driver training courses in Illinois.  We highly recommend that you contact Universal Driving School directly or the Illinois DMV to find out for sure if Universal Driving School offers behind-the-wheel training courses that have been approved by the State of Illinois.
Do I have to take a driver training course? Can't my parents just give me my behind-the-wheel training?
There are some states that do permit parents or guardians to provide their teen-aged kids' required behind-the-wheel training in order to obtain a driver's license.  However many states do not allow any type of substitution for taking a professionally-taught behind-the-wheel training course.  We suggest you contact your state's DMV to find out what the laws are in your state regarding behind-the-wheel training.
I don't know how to drive using a stick-shift. Will Universal Driving School have an automatic-shift car available that I can use for my driver training?
Since you're enrolling in a Chicago, Illinois driver training class, chances are good that you don't know how to drive either a stick-shift OR an automatic!  However, you should let Universal Driving School know what your preference is before registering for their behind-the-wheel class.  That way you'll know for sure they will accommodate you.
Since I live way out in a remote location where driving on unpaved roads and rugged terrain is the norm, will Universal Driving School be able to teach me how to drive in a rural environment? Or do they only prepare you for city-driving?
Since you live in a rural area, odds are that any local driving school in your area such as Universal Driving School will want you to be able to drive safely on dirt roads and bumpy terrain.  We recommend that you contact Universal Driving School directly to find out exactly what they offer.
Can 14-year-olds obtain learner's permits to drive in Illinois?
Most states have set the minimum age for applying for an instruction permit at 15 or 15 1/2.  However, some states do allow 14-year-olds to get a learner's permit.  You may want to contact the Illinois DMV or a Illinois-approved driver training school like Universal Driving School to find out what the minimum age to drive is in Illinois.
Can I take Universal Driving School's behind-the-wheel training course before taking a Chicago, Illinois drivers education classroom course or online course?
It depends on what Illinois's laws say.  However, you should know that most states will require teen-aged, first-time drivers to complete both a drivers education classroom course (which are approximately 30 hours in length, depending on Illinois's laws) or an approved online course, plus a state-approved driver training course.  We recommend that you contact Universal Driving School directly to see if they offer either (or both) of these courses.
I have to complete a driver training class in Chicago, Illinois before Illinois will give me my driver's license. Does Universal Driving School offer this type of course?
Universal Driving School does offer the behind-the-wheel training course in Chicago, Illinois that is required by the State of Illinois.  You will need to contact Universal Driving School directly for more information about the behind-the-wheel courses they offer and their class schedules.
I live in Chicago, Illinois. What requirements must I meet to be able to get my first Illinois driver's license?
It depends on the particular laws of Illinois, but most states require teen-aged first-time license applicants to successfully complete both a drivers education classroom course and a driver training course.  Universal Driving School may offer courses which would meet the behind-the-wheel training requirement, however you will need to contact them directly to find out exactly what types of courses they offer.
Do I have to take a Chicago, Illinois driver training course in order to get a driver's license?
Yes.  All drivers in Illinois must enroll in an approved driver training course in order to receive a driver's license.  Please contact Universal Driving School for information on the types of driver training courses they offer in Chicago, Illinois.
Do I need to have my instruction permit before I register for a driver training course like the one that Universal Driving School offers?
You will need to contact Universal Driving School or the Illinois DMV to find out if you are allowed to enroll in a driver training school like Universal Driving School before obtaining your Illinois learner's permit.
