AARP FAQ’s
Are all the driving schools listed on your website fully-certified by the Alaska DMV to offer behind-the-wheel training courses in Alaska?
The driving school directory on our website is for your convenience only, and we cannot absolutely guarantee that every driving school listed is currently certified to offer behind-the-wheel training courses in Alaska.  We suggest you contact the Alaska DMV to make sure a particular driving school is certified before you sign up to take their driving course.
Somebody told me that I can skip out of attending a driver training school if my parents give me behind-the-wheel training instead. Is that permissible in Alaska?
Each state has its own laws regarding driver training.  Some states will allow parentally-supervised driver training as a substitute for taking a driver training course which is taught by a professional driving instructor.  However, not all states allow this.  You should contact the Alaska DMV to find out for sure.
What happens if I don't know how to drive a stick-shift vehicle? Will AARP allow me to do my behind-the-wheel training with an automatic-shift automobile?
Considering you're a brand new driver, you probably don't know much about driving any type of vehicle--stick-shift or automatic-shift!  However, if you prefer to complete your behind-the-wheel training using an automatic-shift vehicle, you should contact AARP and inform them before you sign up to take their behind-the-wheel training course.  That way you will know for certain if they will accommodate you.
I live in a very rural area, where there are mountains and a lot of dirt roads. Do you know if AARP teaches students how to drive in rural areas like where I live instead of just driving on smooth, paved roads in urban areas?
Since you live in a rural area, a local driving school such as AARP will tailor your behind-the-wheel training to handle the conditions in your area.
I just turned 14 years old. Am I eligible to receive my instruction permit in Alaska?
Probably not.  The minimum age requirement for holding an instruction permit in most states is 15 1/2.  You should contact the Alaska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or a licensed driving school such as AARP to find out more information about the minimum age requirement in Alaska.
Will I be required to enroll in both a drivers education classroom or online course and a behind-the-wheel training course in Fairbanks Alaska?
It depends on which state you live in, but many states now mandate new teen-aged drivers to sign up for both a drivers education course as well as a driver training course.
I'm required to take a behind-the-wheel training course in Fairbanks Alaska. Do you know if AARP offers behind-the-wheel training classes in Fairbanks Alaska?
Yes, AARP does offer behind-the-wheel training courses in Fairbanks Alaska.  For more information about their class schedule and how/when to sign up for one of their behind-the-wheel training courses, please contact AARP directly.
What type of driver ed do I need before Alaska will give me a driver's license?
Each state has its own requirements concerning drivers education, although you should know that most states now mandate all new, young drivers to complete a safe driving classroom or online course as well as a behind-the-wheel training course.  AARP may be able to help you meet the driver training requirement in Alaska.  Please contact either AARP or the Alaska DMV for more information.
Is hands-on driver training required in Alaska in order to be licensed to drive a car?
Absolutely.  All new drivers in Alaska are required to take an approved hands-on driver training course before they can be issued a license to independently drive a motor vehicle.
Is it okay for me to enroll in a behind-the-wheel training class in Alaska before I receive my Alaska learners permit to drive?
Probably not.  Most states require first-time drivers to have their learners permit before they are allowed to register for a driver training program.  You should contact a driving school like AARP and request more information.
