AARP FAQ’s
Is AARP a certified driving school in Alaska?
Just because a driving school appears on our directory of driver training institutions, we cannot guarantee that they are fully licensed to offer hands-on driving courses in Alaska.  We highly recommend that you contact AARP directly or the Alaska DMV to find out for sure if AARP offers driver training courses that have been approved by the State of Alaska.
I've been told that either of my parents can supervise my behind-the-wheel training, so I don't have to attend a Wasilla Alaska driving school like AARP to fulfill my behind-the-wheel training requirement. Do you know if that's true or not?
You will need to contact the Alaska DMV or a state-approved driver training school like AARP to find out.  Some states do allow parent-taught driving, but many states do not.
I can't operate a manual-shift. Will AARP allow me to complete my behind-the-wheel training on an automatic-shift vehicle?
We recommend that you contact AARP and ask them if you can do your behind-the-wheel training using a vehicle that has an automatic shift before registering for their behind-the-wheel training course.
The area in which I live is mostly undeveloped--very few paved roads and mountains are all around. Will AARP be able to teach me how to drive safely on bumpy terrain as well as in a city or town?
Considering that you live in a remote area, chances are excellent that a local driving school like AARP will want you to be able to drive safely on dirt roads and other types of rugged terrain.  You may wish to contact AARP to find out exactly what their driver training course includes before signing up to take their training course.
Are 14-year-olds eligible to obtain a instruction permit in Alaska?
Although a few states allow teen-agers to begin practicing how to drive at 14, most states have set the minimum age for which to receive a learner's permit at either 15 or 15½.  You will need to contact the Alaska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or a certified driving instruction company like AARP to find out what the minimum age for driving is in Alaska.
Do I have to take a Wasilla Alaska classroom or online drivers education course before I can register for a driver training course through AARP?
This requirement varies by state but most states do mandate new teen-aged drivers to take BOTH a classroom-based defensive driving course (generally 30 hours in length) AND a driver training course.  You should ask AARP if they offer one or both programs.
Alaska's DMV has told me that I need to take a driver training course. Do you know if AARP offers this course or not?
AARP does offer the behind-the-wheel training course that Alaska requires all new teen-aged drivers to take.  For more information about the courses AARP offers, we recommend that you contact AARP directly.
What type of driver ed do I need before Alaska will give me a driver's license?
Each state has its own requirements concerning drivers education, although you should know that most states now require all new, young drivers to sign up to take a drivers education classroom or online course as well as a behind-the-wheel training course.  AARP may be able to help you meet the behind-the-wheel training requirement in Alaska.  Please contact either AARP or the Alaska DMV for more information.
Do I have to take a Wasilla Alaska driver training course in order to get a driver's license?
Yes.  All drivers in Alaska must enroll in an approved behind-the-wheel training course in order to receive a driver's license.  Please contact AARP for information on the types of behind-the-wheel training courses they offer in Wasilla Alaska.
Will Alaska allow me to sign up to take a driver training course before I actually receive my instruction permit?
You will need to contact your state's DMV office to find out.  However, most states require that you obtain your instruction permit before you register with a driver training course.
