Colorado Frequently Asked Questions
How old will I need to be before I can get a Colorado instruction permit to drive?
If you successfully complete an approved driver's education and are between the ages of 15 and 15½, you will be eligible for a Driver Education Instruction Permit.  Or, if you are between the ages of 15½ and 16 you will be eligible for a Driver Awareness Instruction Permit.  If you do not successfully complete driver's education, you will be eligible for a Minor Instruction Permit after your 16th birthday.

So, the short answer is 15 if you take (and pass) driver's ed, or 16 if you do not take driver's ed.

Regardless of your age or the type of instruction permit you have, you must always have a licensed Colorado driver who's at least 21 years old seated next to you whenever you drive.
How old do I have to be before I can get a Colorado drivers license?
You are eligible to apply for a minor driver license if you are at least 16 years old and a) you've held a valid instruction permit for at least 12 months, b) you've passed an approved Colorado classroom or online driver education course like the one Teen Driving Course offers, and c) you've completed your required 50 hours of driving practice time with the person who signed your Affidavit of Liability (Form DR2460).

NOTE:  If you are at least 16 but younger than 16½, in addition to the above, you must also complete behind-the-wheel training before obtaining your minor driver license (this is in addition to the 50 hours of driving practice you are required to complete with the person who signed your DR2460 form).  This behind-the-wheel training must consist of six (6) hours behind-the-wheel training with an approved driver education instructor.  If there is no driver training school within 30 miles of where you live, this training may be completed by spending an additional twelve (12) hours of driving practice time with the person who signed your DR2460 form (for a total of 62 hours of driving practice time).
What paperwork do I need to fill out before Colorado will let me learn how to drive?

I have finished the Teen Driving Course and have my Colorado instruction permit. Can I start driving now?
Yes, however please remember that you must have the person who signed your Affidavit of Liability (Form DR2460) or a licensed Colorado driver who's at least 21 seated next to you in the front passenger seat whenever you drive.  Please know that the only driving time you complete which can be counted towards your 50 hours of supervised driving practice is the time you spend driving with the signer of your Form DR2460, or a driver education instructor.
How long do I need to have my learners permit or instruction permit in Colorado before I'm eligible to go for my Colorado drivers license?
If you are under 18 must have held your Colorado instruction permit for at least 12 months before you can get a minor driver's license.  In addition, you must have successfully completed an approved driver education course like the one offered by TeenDrivingCourse.com, the required 50 hours of driving practice with the person who signed your Affidavit of Liability (Form DR2460) and the testing requirements that are prescribed the Colorado DMV.

If you are under the age of 16½, you must also complete an additional six (6) hours of behind-the-wheel training with an approved driver education instructor.  If there is no approved driving school located within 30 miles of where you live, you may satisfy this requirement by increasing your required 50-hour driving practice by 12 hours (for a total of 62 driving practice hours).
Am I required by the Colorado DMV to do behind-the-wheel training?
If you are under the age of 16½ when you apply for your minor license (meaning you've held a driver education instruction permit for at least 12 months) you are required to successfully complete a six(6)-hour behind-the-wheel training class at an approved driving school before getting your minor driver's license (this is in addition to the required 50 hours of driving practice you must complete with the person who signed your Affidavit of Liability [Form DR2460]).

If you live more than 30 miles from the nearest Colorado driving school, you may elect to fulfill your behind-the-wheel training requirement by adding an additional twelve (12) hours of supervised driving with the person who signed your Affidavit of Liability (Form DR2460), for a total of 62 hours of driving practice.
How many hours of supervised driving do I have to have before I can get my Colorado drivers license?
To get your Colorado minor driver's license, the Colorado DMV requires that you practice driving for 50 hours with the person or persons who signed your Affidavit of Liability.  This person must log this time on your Drive Time Log Sheet and sign it before you can present it to the Colorado DMV.
Can my friends ride with me when I get my Colorado instruction permit or drivers license?
Instruction permit holders are NOT permitted to drive with anybody other than the person(s) who signed their Affidavit of Liability (Form DR2460), or licensed Colorado driver who is at least 21 years old.

If you are under 18 and hold a minor driver's license, you may not drive with any non-family passenger under the age of 21 during the first six (6) months after you receive your minor drivers license.  During the second six (6) months you may only carry no more than one (1) non-family passenger who's under 21.  The exception to the passenger restrictions would be if an adult who's at least 21 years old and has held a valid driver's license for at least one (1) year is seated in the front passenger seat next to you.

These passenger restrictions are lifted starting with the second (2nd) year of having your minor driver license.
Does Colorado let me drive alone with my instruction permit? What about my drivers license?
Instruction permit holders may not drive alone.  They must always be accompanied by either the person who signed their Affidavit of Liability (Form DR 2460), or a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old.

After you receive your minor driver's license, if you are under 18 you are not allowed to drive between the hours of 12:00am and 5:00am until you have had your Colorado drivers license for one (1) full year.  Exceptions include if your parent/guardian or a licensed adult driver who's at least 21 and has held a driver's license for at least one (1) year is riding with you, or if you are driving to school (and school does not provide transporation) or work.  If so,you must carry a written letter signed by your school principal or your employer while you drive.
