When can I start driving after I get my New Jersey learners permit?
You can start driving right away with a learners permit.  But remember that in New Jersey you must be accompanied by a 21-year old licensed New Jersey driver who's seated in the front passenger seat at all times while you drive.
Now that I have my permit, how long before I can get my New Jersey drivers license?
The New Jersey MVC requires you that you complete state-approved driver education courses and practice driving for one (1) year before applying for your New Jersey provisional drivers license.  You must be at least 17 years old to qualify for a drivers license.
Do I need behind the wheel training from a driving school to get my New Jersey drivers license?
Probably, yes.  Just to get your learners permit in New Jersey, you must be enrolled in approved behind-the-wheel driver education course through the New Jersey Department of Education or an approved commercial driving school.

If you are 17 or older, however, you do not have to take a behind-the-wheel driving course to get your learners permit.  You only need to pass your driving exams.
Not including my drivers education course, how many hours of supervised driving do I need before I can get my drivers license in New Jersey?
New Jersey's MVC only requires you to participate in a driver education course and, if you are under 17, behind-the-wheel driver training school.  You do not need to log any additional supervised driving.  However it is best that you get as much training as possible to ensure you get your New Jersey provisional drivers license the first time you try, and to help you avoid accidents once you are allowed to drive.

If you have a New Jersey learners permit, you can only have passengers from your household, plus one (1) additional person.  Also, whenever you drive, you must also be accompanied by a licensed New Jersey driver who's at least 21 years old and has at least of three (3) years of driving experience, seated in the front passenger seat.
I have my New Jersey provisional drivers license--can my friends ride with me now?
The first six (6) months after receiving your New Jersey provisional license, you are limited to only one (1) passenger who is not a member of your household with you when you drive.
Can I drive without supervision if I only have my learners permit?
Absolutely NOT!  You must always be accompanied by a 21-year old New Jersey driver with at least 3 years of driving experience seated in the drivers seat whenever you drive.  This is for your safety, your education, and the safety of other New Jersey drivers.  Be smart and obey this important New Jersey traffic law while learning how to drive.  You will be driving independently soon enough!
