How old do I need to be to get a learners permit in Wyoming?
Normally, you have to be 15 years old to get a learners permit in Wyoming. 

There are some exceptions for teens living in extreme rural areas that need to drive themselves to school, who can apply for a restricted drivers license at 14. Please contact the Wyoming DMV for more information.
Can I take my driver education online?
Anyone can take online driver education. How many questions are on Teen Driving Course's final exam?
35 questions, of which you will need to answer at least 28 correctly (that's 80%).  Even if you don't pass the first time, you can take the final exam over and over again until you score at least an 80%.  You are not charged extra for retaking the final exam.

How long will it take for Teen Driving Course to get my completion certificate to me?
Teen Driving Course will mail your completion certificate to you right after you pass your final exam. Delivery time is normally about 3-5 business days. However, you may opt to have your certificate delivered by FedEx for an additional fee. FedEx offers 3rd Day, 2nd Day, and Overnight Delivery service. The choice is yours.
Can I start driving immediately after I get my Wyoming learners permit?
Yes, you can.  However, you MUST have an 18-year old licensed Wyoming driver in your passenger seat at all times.

There are a few exceptions in which a Wyoming learners permit holder living in a rural area can drive alone between the hours of 5am and 8pm if they are driving to school and have written authorization from the Wyoming DMV.  You must keep this written authorization with you whenever you drive.  You will need to show it to any law enforcement officer who asks why you're driving unsupervised with a learners permit.

 

How long do I have to have my learners permit before I can get my Wyoming drivers license?
6 months.  You must also have had your 16th birthday before upgrading to an intermediate driver's license in Wyoming.
Do I have to take a behind the wheel driver training class to get my Wyoming drivers license?
While you are not required to take a state-approved drivers education course which includes behind-the-wheel training from a licensed Wyoming professional driving instructor, not taking it may delay your being able to get a provisional drivers license for up to six (6) months after your 16th birthday.

Do I have to do supervised driving practice outside of what I would do in a drivers education course?
As you know, Wyoming is a physically large, but only sparsely populated state with a rugged terrain.  As such, many Wyoming drivers must take long drives often through many different types of driving conditions.  The DMV wants to make sure that you are fully prepared to handle driving in Wyoming.

Therefore, you will need to log at least 50 hours of driving practice with your licensed driver-parent/guardian, or a licensed driver who's at least 18 years old and approved by your parent/guardian.  10 of these 50 hours must be done at night.

Can I have passengers or friends in the car I'm driving when I have my Wyoming learners permit?
With a learners permit, you are not allowed to have passengers under the age of 18 who are not related to you. 


Can friends or passengers ride with me after I get my provisional Wyoming drivers license?
Intermediate license holders may only carry one (1) non-family passenger who's under 18 years of age unless a qualified supervising driver is in the vehicle.  Additionally, every passenger in the vehicle must wear their own seat belt.






Can I drive alone with a Wyoming learners permit?
No, you cannot drive alone with only a Wyoming learners permit.  An exception is if you have a restricted junior drivers license which allows you to drive to and from school. 

Please know that you may not drive at all with only a learners permit in Wyoming between the hours of 8pm and 5am.
