Top Driver FAQ’s
Top Driver is listed on your website as a driving school which offers driver training courses. How do I know if Top Driver is a certified school in Ohio?
While we include a list of driver training schools on our website for your convenience, we cannot guarantee that every single one of them is currently licensed by the Ohio DMV.  We suggest you contact Top Driver directly or the Ohio DMV to find out if Top Driver is a fully-accredited driving school.
Somebody told me that I can skip out of attending a driver training school if my parents give me behind-the-wheel training instead. Is that permissible in Ohio?
Each state has its own rules regarding driver training.  Some states will allow parentally-supervised driver training as a substitute for taking a driver training course which is taught by a professional driving instructor.  However, not all states allow this.  You should contact the Ohio DMV to find out for sure.
What if I don't know how to operate a vehicle with a manual-shift? Does Top Driver have an automatic-shift vehicle they'll let me train with?
Since you're just learning how to drive, you probably don't know how to operate either a stick-shift or an automatic-shift vehicle!  However, if you have a preference as to a manual or an automatic, you probably should call Top Driver to see if they can accommodate your request prior to your signing up to take their behind-the-wheel training course.
The area in which I live is mostly undeveloped--very few paved roads and mountains are all around. Will Top Driver be able to teach me how to drive safely on rugged terrain as well as in a city or town?
Considering that you live in a remote area, chances are excellent that a local driving school like Top Driver will want you to be able to drive safely on dirt roads and other types of bumpy terrain.  You may wish to contact Top Driver to find out exactly what their behind-the-wheel training course includes before signing up to take their training course.
After I turn 14, will I be eligible to get my instruction permit so I can begin to learn how to drive?
It depends on which state you live in, however most states unfortunately require you to be at least 15 (or sometimes 15 1/2) before you can be issued a instruction permit.  We suggest that you contact a local driver training school such as Top Driver or the Ohio DMV office to learn more about the minimum age requirement for driving in Ohio.
Do I have to take both a drivers education classroom course and a driver training course in Lakewood Ohio to get my Ohio driver's license?
The laws vary depending on which state you live in, but most states do require that pre-licensed drivers sign up to take a defensive driving classroom course and a behind-the-wheel training course.  You may want to call a driving instruction company like Top Driver and find out if they offer either (or both) of these programs.
I am looking to sign up to take a Lakewood Ohio drivers education course. Can Top Driver assist me with this?
Yes.  behind-the-wheel training courses are available in Lakewood Ohio through Top Driver.  Please contact Top Driver directly with questions regarding their schedule of classes and registration information.
What type of driver ed do I need before Ohio will give me a driver's license?
Each state has its own requirements concerning drivers education, although you should know that most states now mandate all new, young drivers to complete a drivers education classroom or online course as well as a driver training course.  Top Driver may be able to help you fulfill the behind-the-wheel training requirement in Ohio.  Please contact either Top Driver or the Ohio DMV for more information.
Is it necessary for me to complete a driver training course in order to get my first Ohio driver's license?
Yes, it is.  All teen-aged drivers applying for their first driver's license in Ohio are required to take a state-approved behind-the-wheel training course.
Is it possible to sign up to take a Ohio-certified behind-the-wheel training course before I obtain my Ohio learners permit?
It depends on what the specific laws are in Ohio, however most states require first-time drivers to receive an learners permit before registering for a driver training course.  We recommend you contact a driving school such as Top Driver to obtain more information.
